Arthur O. Niinisto, 95, of Conneaut, passed away Sunday morning, July 16, 2017 at Carrington Park in Ashtabula. He was born August 1, 1921 in Conneaut, and was the son of Oscar and Fanny (Hanhikoski) Niinisto.
Mr. Niinisto graduated from Conneaut High School in 1940 and enrolled in the U.S. Army Air Corp, and furthered his education at Chanute Field-Army Air Corps Technical School. He worked for P & C Dock Company and retired from Reliance Electric in 1982.
Arthur was baptized at the Finnish Evangelical Church as an infant and continued his faith at Faith Lutheran Church, which is now known as Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was proud of his Finnish Heritage and was a member of the Finnish American Heritage Association in Ashtabula. He was also a past member of the Evergreen Lodge #222 F & AM, and was a 76 year member of the Conneaut American Legion Cowle Post 151. Arthur enjoyed woodworking, using his talent to build his own home. He also enjoyed music, and weaving rugs which he learned from his mother.
Survivors include his wife Mildred (Kitinoja) Niinisto whom he would have celebrated 70 years; his daughter Joanne Freedman of Conneaut; his son Ross (Sharon) of Conneaut; grandchildren Eric (Annie) Freedman, Julie (David) Coffield, Natalie (Cody) Knepp, James (Ann) Niinisto, and George (Michelle) Niinisto; and great grandchildren Jackson Knepp, Megan and Nathan Niinisto, Landon, Luke, Lyla, and Lincoln Freedman, Joshua Niinisto, and Juniper and Maple Coffield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Hugo and Aarne Sundstrom.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, July 31, 2017 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Rev. Patrick J. Van De Motter officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
Contributions may be made to the Music Department at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or to Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the service and the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, which has been entrusted with arrangements.
