Welcome to the memorial page for

Christopher E. Horwood

March 24, 1967 ~ October 29, 2017 (age 50) 50 Years Old

Christopher E. Horwood, 50, of Conneaut, born March 24, 1967 to James and Jean (Sundberg) Horwood, passed away Sunday October 29, 2017 at Hospice House in Cleveland accompanied by his daughter Lindsey and Son-In-Law Byron. He was just one month shy of 10 years since his diagnosis with Alpha 1 Anti-Trypsin Deficiency. At diagnosis Chris had been given 5 years to live and told he shouldn't even be walking; 5 years later he was riding his final MS 150 Mile Bike Ride, Escape to the Lake.

Chris was a hard worker, often working 2-3 jobs to provide for his family. He spent many years working for Premix and Millenium. He became a part time firefighter at North Kingsville Volunteer FD after being touched by the men and women who chose to spend a cold evening dressed as Santa Clause passing out Candy Canes on the truck to local children. He spent upwards of 20 years dedicated to this endeavor. Later he went onto pursue firefighting as a career working as a part time payed position at the Conneaut FD, and graduating from the Columbus Ohio Fire Academy at the top of his class despite being the oldest one there. He also went on to spend one year as a Civilian Combat Firefighter in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he saved a fellow firefighter from a fire during a training exercise.

He was a member of the Conneaut Church of Christ, North Kingsville Fire Department, and the Conneaut Saddle Soars MS Bike Team. Chris was an avid outdoors-man and adrenaline junky enjoying camping, fishing, hunting, firefighting, spending time with his grandchildren, and anything someone told him he wasn't capable of doing.

He is survived by his wife Doreen (Taylor) Horwood, whom he married June 16, 2012; his mother Jean Horwood of Conneaut; his son Ryan (Vicky) Lucas of Fayettville, SC; his daughters Lindsey (Byron) Hayes of Franklin Furnace, OH, Lauren Horwood of Columbus, Alexis Taylor of Conneaut, and Shelby Funk of Pennsylvania; his twin sister Cathy Horwood of WV; his brother Gregory (Kathy) Horwood of TX; and grandchildren Maddissyn, Killien, Avynne, Piersen, Jaxen, Abigail, Chloe, and Christopher; step-son, Jake Tackett of Conneaut.  Also surviving is his mother-in-law Sandy (Joe) Garstenshlager of Conneaut, his foreign exchange daughter Dr. Taeko Hyuga; and several aunts, uncles, and more distant relatives.

He is preceded in death by his father James; his brother James; his sons Christopher and Samuel, his daughter Courtney; and his uncle Bob Horwood.

Memorial service will be 11 AM, Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Conneaut Church of Christ, 448 W. Main Rd., Conneaut, with Tim Kraus officiating.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations in Chris's name be made to N.E.O. Outdoor Opportunities (Nick Davis) or to your local Fire Department.
