Katherine D. Gilbert, 98, of Conneaut, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at The Villa At The Lake in Conneaut, OH. She was born November 13, 1919, in Piedmont, KS, to James Ona and Sena (Johnson) Johnston.
Katherine taught in a one room school house and worked at Benchcraft Air during WW II. She moved to Conneaut from East Springfield, PA, in 1968, and worked for many years at J. C. Penney, retiring in 1984.
She was a strong Christian woman, and in 1945 became a member of the First Assembly of God where she worked in all areas of the church, including teaching Sunday school for over 50 years. Katherine’s lifelong quote was “The best gift you can give your children is to raise them in a Christian home.” Make family memories! Katherine hosted all holiday dinners at her house, and enjoyed reading and sewing.
Survivors include her daughters Johna (David) Hershelman of Leesburg, GA, and Mary Cote of Dallas, TX; her grandchildren Ken (Kathy) Zappitella, Dianna (Jim) Noe, Marci Zappitella, Tony Jarocz, and Nicole Jarocz; 12 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 60 years Kenneth Gilbert; and her brother Johnnie Johnston.
Katherine’s family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at The Villa At The Lake and Hospice of the Western Reserve for their attentive and loving care.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Monday, February 5, 2018, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Rev. George Fink of First Assembly of God officiating. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery, East Springfield, PA.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2:00-4:00 PM, Sunday, February 4, 2018.
