Robert L. GoldsmithMay 22, 1918 ~ October 26, 2017 (age 99)
Robert L. Goldsmith, 99, of Conneaut passed away Thursday October 26, 2017 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. He was born May 22, 1918 in Conneaut, Ohio to Lee and Lottie (Barney) Goldsmith.
He graduated from high school in 1936 and worked for his father until being drafted into the United States Air Force in 1942. He then graduated from Armorer school at Lowry Field, Denver, CO before going to Aerial gunnery school in Las Vegas, NV. Robert was assigned to the 385th H.B. Group, 550th squadron, as a ball turret gunner. He joined the 8th Air Force in England. Robert was shot down over Northern Germany while on his 8th mission on February 24, 1944. He was a Prisoner of War for 15 months in three different camps. After the war he went the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.
In the 50’s he was active in painting water colors of local scenes. In the 70’s he started an antique shop in his father’s former Shell Gas Station on Rt. 20 in Conneaut.
He retired from Union Carbide on June 30, 1981 after 25 years of service.
He was a member of the Federated Church in East Springfield, PA, American Legion Cowle Post #151 since 1945, Ashtabula County Antique Dealers Association, and longtime member of the O.G.C.A.
Survivors include his friends, Frank Yusko, Bob (Judy) English and Gary (Sandy) Chandler all of Conneaut.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Arlowene N. Rector.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday October 30, 2017, at the Marcy Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, with Pastor Rick Plucknett officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM until time of service on Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve or to Federated Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
