Jerry D Self Sr., 76, of Monroe Twp., died Sunday Dec 2, 2018 at Carrington Park Nursing Home in Ashtabula, OH. He was born January 26, 1942, to Phearon and Onabell (George) Self in Gadson, AL.
Jerry grew up in Ashtabula and after high school graduation, he enlisted in the Unites States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he then served for nearly 20 years as a reservist in the Ohio National Guard and worked at Transplastics in Conneaut as an engineer. He then returned to Alabama for a period of time and worked at the University of Alabama as a dental maintenance technician retiring in 2006. After his retirement, Jerry returned to Conneaut to make his home.
He loved nature and life; especially Conneaut and its beautiful Lake Erie, hiking in the Appalachian trails, supporting the Southwest Indian Foundation as he recognized himself as being part of the Cherokee heritage, and he was very into studying health and the importance of healthy eating.
Religion was very important to Jerry and studied many different beliefs most recently studying Jehovah.
He was so happy he moved to the area especially making new friends having breakfast at State Street Diner, his favorite soup at the Rainbow Café’ and dinner with fellow Veterans at the American Legion Cowle Post 151.
Survivors include his daughter Shawnda (Mike Delisle) Rea-Delisle of Pierpont; two granddaughters Desiree Self of Boise, Idaho and Angelina Vera of Columbus, OH; and mother of his children Jean Self of Ashtabula, OH.
Proceeding him in death are his parents, stepfather (whom raised him) Bill Hughes, and son Jerry D. Self Jr.
At Jerry’s request there will be no services.
