Collette M. (Lawrence) Brunot-Shugerts, 83, of Conneaut, passed away Monday morning, July 22, 2024, surrounded by family at UH Conneaut Medical Center. She was born July 9, 1941, in Meadville, PA, the daughter of George and Josephine “Jo” (Henry) Lawrence.
Collette graduated from Randolph East Mead High School in Guys Mills, PA in 1959 where she was a fire twirling majorette. She helped her late husband (Ron Brunot) operate R&B Glass while caring for her 4 children. After her children were grown and off on their own, she decided to become a police officer graduating from the Ohio State Police Academy. Collette was the second female ever hired by the Conneaut Police Dept on October 6, 1986. She retired after 20 years of service. Her police accomplishments included being on the sexual assault team, running the Conneaut D.A.R.E. program for 10-years, and was the Police Officer of the Year. She was known to all as “Officer Collette”. Collette received several community service awards as well, including the Conneaut Citizen of the Year Award, Conneaut’s Chamber of Commerce President’s Award, and Friend of Education Award. Collette was also known for her role as the officer for Conneaut’s Safety Town and as “Mrs. Claus”.
She was a board member for many years for CLYO, started the girls’ softball program, and worked the concession stand. Collette was a judge for many beauty pageants at various local festivals. She volunteered for many local plays with the Conneaut Capers as a costume designer and once in a while with a small role like “Mae West”. She also helped acquire costumes for “The Dark Secret of Harvest Home” movie starring Betty Davis. She was a member of several clubs including the PTO, Mat Club, Coaches Club, Mothers Club, Red Hat Society, Conneaut Yacht Club, July 4th Committee, Oktoberfest, Mother Achievement League, Moose Lodge Aux, Elks Club, American Legion Aux, Eagles Aux, Optimist Club, and Trail Busters Snowmobile Club. She was also a board member for the Conneaut Community Center, Conneaut Credit Union, Conneaut Arts Center, and Human Resource Center where she helped with Right Track and helped create the Arts Center. Collette was a Poll worker for the Election Board and ran the Litter Control Department. In her spare time, Collette was an avid bowler, a women’s slo-pitch pitcher, and loved to travel with her husband Tom in their RV across the country or on cruise ships to various ports of call.
Survivors include her husband Thomas Shugerts whom she married June 5, 1993; her children Rick (Patty) Brunot of Conneaut, Cindi (LeAnn) Brunot of Lantana, FL, Doug (Nickey) Brunot of Homosassa, FL, and Pamela Brunot of Conneaut; step-daughter Stacey (Josh) Mueller of Niagara Falls, NY; grandchildren D.J. (Fiancé Stephanie Simpson) Brunot of Land O’ Lakes, FL, Molly (Fiancé Ted Milosevich) Brunot of Land O’ Lakes, FL, Steve (Fiancé Samantha Magana) Altman of Ruskin, FL, Sammantha (Mike) Weimer of Spring Hill, FL, Danielle Rinaman of Boynton Beach, FL; great-grandchildren Everly Brunot, Hailey and Hanna Deforest, RJ Brunot, Tanner Rinaman, Trevor and Emma Brown, and step-grandchildren Carter and Elyana Mueller of Niagara Falls, NY. Also surviving are her sisters Sandra Lawrence of Meadville, PA and Penny (Jim) Howard of Texarkana, Tx; and brother G. Scott Lawrence of Meadville along with several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her foster parents Doris and Earl Porter; and her step-brother Bruce Weller.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, July 25, 2024, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. Burial will follow in East Conneaut Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1:00-3:00 and 5:00-7:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the funeral home.
