Dennis W. Mitchell, Sr.

Dennis W. Mitchell, Sr., was reunited with his loving wife and our Lord on December 3, 2024. Dennis was born in Erie, Pa on June 30, 1958, to Elmer and Wilma (Jane) Mitchell. Dennis was a graduate of Northwestern High School and Erie County Technical School. He spent 35 years as an employee of the Ohio Department of Transportation until he retired to travel with his wife, family, and friends.

Dennis married the love of his life Carol Mitchell in 1979 and shared forty-three glorious years together. They were blessed with two sons, Dennis Jr. and Andrew. Dennis and Carol spent years giving back to the community while volunteering at the Lighthouse Harvest Foundation in Ashtabula Ohio. Dennis also served his community for many years as a firefighter in various departments and lent his experience to the Coldwater Drown team for Ashtabula County.

Dennis loved to be spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed working around his garage, tinkering with just about anything, riding his Can-Am with his friends and family, and creating great meals on his Blackstone and his smoker. He also enjoyed hosting backyard pool parties so he could share stories and enjoy the company of good friends.

Dennis was a lover of sports. From starting Mitchell Racing when he was young as a drag racing team, to when his sons became older and that racing passion was transferred to go-kart racing, to now radio-controlled cars with his grandson. He also loved his Pittsburgh Steelers and trash-talking to his sons as Browns fans. Dennis was also a life member of the Amboy Rifle Club where he shot on the rifle team with his sons and grandson.

Dennis was the best grandfather that would do anything for his four grandchildren Dennis III, Ryan, Aaron, and Courtney. He supported all their activities and just cherished being Poppy. He had a servant's heart and would give unselfishly to others at a moment's notice for his time and knowledge.

Dennis is survived by his sons, Dennis, Jr. (Erin), and Andrew (April); grandchildren, Dennis III, Ryan, Aaron, and Courtney. Survivors also include his siblings, Ed Mitchell, Diane (Lyle) Hiscox, and Elaine Mitchell along with brother-in-laws Alan (Sandy) Harrison, Dale Harrison, Frank (Marsha) Howell, Dave (Renee) Howell, and sister-in-laws Mary (Shane) Hunter and Deanna Howell and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carol, his parents, and brother-in-law Ray Howell.

A celebration of life will be held at the Sheffield Fire Department on January 11, 2025, from 12 pm -3 pm. Memorial contributions can be made to the family.
