Donald Horwood, 93, of Conneaut, passed away September 7, 2023 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home, Kingsville, OH. He was born September 30, 1929 in Conneaut, the son of George and Dorothy Horwood.
Don was a 1947 graduate of Rowe High School where he was class president for four years. At Rowe, he participated in basketball, baseball, and track. He continued to play baseball with the East Conneaut Firemen and West Springfield Merchants baseball teams. He played City League basketball with Ed Gray’s All-Stars and Astatic teams as well as fast-pitch softball with the State Diner, General Motors, and Astatic teams.
After high school Don studied for two quarters at Fenn College (Cleveland State) then returned to Conneaut to work at B & B Cleaners until 1959. At that time, he enrolled in Kent State to study to be a high school math teacher. He taught math at Ashtabula High from 1962-1978 at which time he became Administrative Assistant to Gene Galiffo in the Conneaut City Schools.
Don married Ruth Armstrong (deceased) in January 1952. They were parents to daughters Joanne and Dianne and son Aaron. Soon after marriage, Don was drafted into the Army and served in Germany during the Cold War.
Don served as Superintendent of Schools in Conneaut from 1984 until his retirement in 1990. He married Patricia Cole Pratt in 1991. His wife was a great helpmate as he pursued his hobby of farming. Together the couple raised beef cattle and planted and harvested corn and hay crops.
Don was a cancer and stroke survivor and in later life depended upon his wife Pat to do most of the work around their home.
Don attended First Congregational United Church of Christ where he taught Sunday morning Bible study class. He was formerly a member of First Baptist Church where he directed the choir, taught Sunday School and was church treasurer.
Don is survived by his wife Patricia, daughters Joanne (Kent) Turner and Dianne (Mike) Hicks, son Aaron (Shannon) Horwood, granddaughter Olivia (Anthony) Lemons, grandson Jared Hicks, great-grandchildren Wyatt and Scarlett Lemons, brother Jeff (Kathy) Horwood, and sister-in-law Jean Horwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and James, aunt Joyce Barnard Funk, and wife Ruth Armstrong Horwood.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, September 12, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 PM and also on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Cowle Post #151.
