Douglas R. Murphy, 87, of Conneaut, passed away Thursday July 28, 2022 at the Jefferson Healthcare Center. He was born July 2, 1935 in Conneaut, the son of Paul J. and Emogene (Blakeslee) Murphy.
He graduated from Conneaut High School in 1953 and received a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education decree in 1958 from Ohio University in Athens, OH.
He taught 6th grade in Chesterhill Ohio in 1958, and 7th and 8th grade in Hardin County, KY from 1960-1968. He taught learning disabled children in private schools in Louisville, KY from 1969-1972 and in Lake Forest, IL from 1972-1974. He was summer director of the Conneaut Historical Railroad Museum in 1965 and 1966 and worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad as a clerk-operator on the Cleveland Division in 1959 until he was drafted into the U. S. Army and sent to Fort Know Armor Center where he was a typist. He worked at a children’s home in Louisville, KY from 1974-1976. Following that, he worked in various places in the regions of Nashville, TN and Vineland, NJ. His last job was in the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, OH from 1984-1999. He retired from work to care for his mother in Conneaut in 1999.
Douglas enjoyed traveling and inventing new versions of railroad equipment.
He was preceded in death by his father Paul Murphy in 1977 and his mother Emogene Murphy in 2003.
Graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 2, 2022 in East Conneaut Cemetery, Furnace Rd., Conneaut with Rev. Russ Ham of New Leaf United Methodist Church officiating.
Contributions may be made to the Conneaut Historical Railroad Museum, 363 Depot St. Conneaut, OH 44030. Envelopes will be available at the service and at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, which has charge of arrangements.
