Dr. Antero C. Tan, M.D., 83, of Conneaut, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at the Cleveland Clinic. He was born September 20, 1937 in Naguilian, La Union, Philippines, the son of Icasiano A. and Sixta Cachero Tan.
Dr. Tan grew up in Baguio City, Philippines, who had all been praying for him, and moved to the United States in 1962. He earned his M.D. in 1961 from Santo Tomas University in Manila and was regulated in the practice of Medicine and Surgery. Dr. Tan continued his Surgical Residency at Lutheran General Hospital; including several rotations at MetroHealth System as well as an Assistantship at St. John Hospital in Cleveland from 1968-1970. He moved to Conneaut in 1970 having his own medical practice and worked as a Physician and Surgeon at Brown Memorial Hospital, retiring as Chief of Surgery in 1999.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Parish/St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and the American Medical Association. After retirement, golfing was his passion; he loved playing the local courses around Conneaut; and playing in South Carolina during the winter months. When he wasn’t playing golf, he was watching golf tutorials, working on his swing, and teaching his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan of all Cleveland sports teams.
He enjoyed cooking and sharing the food of the Philippines with his friends. He had his food stand, Philippine Connection, at the Conneaut Oktoberfest and the 4th of July Festival with his family, the Tagle family and family from Toronto. They sold his special recipe pork-on-a stick, egg rolls, and fried rice. Many loved Dr. Tan’s food and he especially loved standing out front talking and visiting with everyone.
Dr. Tan’s greatest joy was being with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan H. (Hess) Tan, whom he married May 11, 1968; his son Timothy (Pamela) Tan of Canton, OH; his daughters Debra (Marcel) Fleming of Ashtabula; Alison Tan of Parkville, Maryland, Maribeth Tan of Parkville, Maryland, and Amanda (Justin) Sanford of Conneaut; and grandchildren Isabelle and Sophia Fleming, Emmanuel Tan, Olivia and Cameron Sorrell, and Amelia, Naomi, and Carter Sanford.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Dr. Tan’s family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the Conneaut Fire Department, UH Conneaut Medical Center, Dr. Meranda and the nurses at UHCMC, and the MICU team of doctors and nurses at the Cleveland Clinic for their care and comfort during this time.
