George H. Dixon, Sr., 91, of Conneaut passed away Monday morning at UH Conneaut Medical Center. He was born May 26,1930 in Conneaut, Ohio the son of Oscar & Verna (Biscoff) Dixon.
After graduation from Rowe High School in 1948 he married Rose Marie Lewis in 1949. They were married for 61 years until her passing in 2011.
George joined the National Guard, serving from 1948 to 1954. He was called to active duty from 1950-1952 due to the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of Corporal.
George proudly owned Dixon’s Sunoco Service Center and worked at Reactive Metals while volunteering at East Lakeville Fire Department-eventually becoming Fire Chief. He began his career as a full-time fireman with the City of Conneaut, while also working part-time at the Conneaut Leather Company. He retired from the Conneaut Fire Department in 1988.
George belonged to Evergreen Lodge #222 in Conneaut, Ohio serving as Worshipful Master three times and received his 50-year pin in 2018. Additionally, he was a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Cleveland, Conneaut Council #40, Northeast Chapter #8, and Columbian Commandry #52. He also belonged to American Legion Post #888 in Delaware, Ohio.
He loved fixing things, working on old trucks and cars, wintering in Texas, listening to old-time country music and visiting with family and friends and sitting on his front porch “watching cars go by” with his buddy “Spike”. He was affectionately known by all as “Papa Geo” or “Pop”.
Survivors include his children, George (Carolyn) Dixon, Jr, Bonnie (Frank) Bernato, David (Terri) Dixon, & Janet (Dana) Quinn; grandchildren Tony Bernato, Jennifer Dixon, Mike (Kim) Bernato, Jessica (Christopher)Clark, Elliot Dixon, Joel (Laura) Dixon Johanna (Jason) Coppock & Tom (Christine) Bernato; great-grandchildren, Kimberly Roxberry, Joey Clark, Derek Dixon, Connor Clark, Emily Bernato, Parker Coppock, Robert Ward, Jeffrey Ward, Jackson Clark, Hayley (Rosie) Coppock, Matthew Dixon, Frankie Bernato, Nora Bernato, & Alexandra Bernato; siblings, Roy (JoAnn) Dixon, Edward (Peggy) Dixon; his friend Lois Greenfield and his dog Spike.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Rose; brothers Gilbert “Gibby” Dixon, William “Bill” Dixon and sister Verna Stearns.
Funeral service will be held noon Friday June 18, 2021, at the Marcy Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Thursday June 17, 2021, with a Masonic Service conducted at 7 PM Thursday by Evergreen Lodge #222 in Conneaut. Calling hours will be held from 11:00 AM until time of service on Friday with Conneaut Fire Dept IAFF Local #651 performing honor guard at the funeral home. Masks encouraged if not fully vaccinated.
Burial will take place in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville with military honors conducted by the American Legion Cowle Post #151.
Memorial contributions may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Conneaut Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local #651, or to the APL. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
