Former Conneaut resident, George V. Voytek, 83, passed away Monday, December 4, 2023 at The Villa at Marymount in Garfield Heights, OH. He was born January 7, 1940 in Warren, OH, the son of Adam and Viarda (Grinta) Voytek.
Mr. Voytek earned his Bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State in 1963 and his Master’s degree from Vandercook College of Music in 1968. He started his teaching career at Warren St. Mary’s High School, which became JFK High School. He composed and arranged the Alma Mater and Fight song for JFK.
In 1968 he accepted the position of band and choir director for Conneaut Area City Schools, retiring in 1993 and then returning for one more year in 1998-99. Arriving in Conneaut during/after the merger of Rowe HS with CHS, he again created a Fight Song and Alma Mater for the combined schools. Highlights of his tenure in Conneaut include being the first band to perform in the Buffalo Bills Rich Stadium and hosting Chase, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, the US Navy Band and the American Wind Symphony for local clinics and performances. The CHS band room has been named “The George Voytek Band Room” in honor of his years of dedication to the music department.
George was a member of St. Mary/St. Frances Cabrini Church while living in Conneaut, directing the choirs at both churches. In addition, he directed the Ashtabula Town Choir, a community men’s chorus, for over 20 years. He was a member of the Ashtabula Symphonic Band for 20+ years and directed the band from 1995-2000. George was also involved with both the Kilpi Chorus and Community Band at the Conneaut Community center, performing summer concerts as well as the annual Madrigal Dinner.
Survivors include his sons Michael (Sherri) Voytek, Joel (Rebecca) Voytek and their children Mara, Makenna, Maecy, and Daniel Voytek and his children Madeline and George, his sister Karen (Greg) Mueller, and his companion Marilyn Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Beverly (Horm) Voytek in 2002.
Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 PM, Friday, December 15, 2023 at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 16, 2023 at St. Frances Cabrini Church with Rev. Andrew Turner officiating. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
