Gordon E. Shears, 97, of Ashtabula, passed away Friday, December 15, 2023 at his home. Born May 9, 1926 in North Kingsville, OH, he was the son of Clarence and Alice (Lyons) Shears. Gordon graduated from Kingsville class of 1944.
He worked for the New York Central Railroad for a short time before joining the United States Army. He was shipped off to the European Theater in WWII. After being honorably discharged, he went to Radio School in Cleveland where he obtained a job at a radio station there. He came back home and secured a job at Electromet, also known as Elkem Metals, where he retired in 1985 as a shift supervisor.
After his retirement, Gordon worked for Marcy Funeral Home and the Family Care Group driving the hearse for funerals. Gordon belonged to the Kingsville First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and a Trustee. He belonged to Ashtabula Crank Bicycle Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Peggy whom he married in 1948; children Terry and Judy; brothers Leslie, Harold, Donald, and Richard (infancy); and sisters Donna and Alice.
He is survived by his children Mark, Debra, and Richard; his grandchildren Judy Kay, Mark Jr., Rebekah, Amanda, Sarah, Ashlie, Frank, Amy, and Michael; ten great-grandchildren; and dear friend of 33 years Ruth Powell.
Funeral service will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the funeral home Facebook page. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH, with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Cowel Post #151.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until the time of the service at 1:00 PM at the funeral home on Thursday.
