John Chapin Jr. Obituary

John W. Chapin Jr., 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday
September 27, 2025 at his daughter’s home in Chesterfield, Virginia. He was born
August 28, 1949 at Ashtabula General Hospital in Ashtabula, OH to John W. and Sylvia
(Frey) Chapin Sr.
John was a 1967 graduate of Edgewood High School and worked for Rockwell
Industries, Linde Air and Motor Express driving tactor trailer from 1971-1980 before
becoming a firefighter for the City of Conneaut and retired in 2015 as Captain following
forty-five years of service. He was the proud co-owner of Chapin’s West End Hardware
serving the area residents with all their hardware needs.
He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where he served as
Council President for over seven years, Evergreen Masonic Lodge #332, Conneaut
Moose Lodge #472, past president of the Conneaut Athletic Boosters, past president of
the El Camp Wednesday night league, past president of the West Lakeville Hose
Booster for sixteen years, Firefighters Association Local 651 and the Conneaut
Exchange Club.
John kept very active playing slow-pitch softball until the age of 68, loved watching the
Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers, bowling, a good round
of golf, an afternoon trip to the casino and most of all, he loved to visit his daughters and
beloved grandchildren to spend time with them.
Survivors include his loving wife Susan (Borgerding), whom he married January 4,
1969. Two daughters Tammy (Andre Darlymple) Ertl of Pittsboro, NC and Tiffany (Dan)
Blom of Chesterfield, VA; a sister Karin (Robert) Tennant of Conneaut, OH; three
brothers Daniel (Deb Burgener) of Sterling, VA, Michael (Joan) of The Villages, FL, and
Roy of Canoga Park, California; Grandchildren Rachel (Wes) Ewing, Jennifer (Daniel)
Bohuczky, Ethan (Sarah Crockett) Blom, Camden Blom, Mia Blom, Brooke (Carter Hill)
Ertl and Ava Blom; two great grandchildren, Banks and Baylor; and several nieces and
nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents and two brothers Christopher and Allen Chapin.
Funeral Service will be 11:00am, Friday October 3, 2025 at Good Shepherd Lutheran
Church, 876 Grove St., Conneaut, OH 44030. Graveside service will follow in Glenwood
Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00-7:00pm, Thursday October 2, 2025 at the Marcy Funeral Home
and Cremation Center 208 Liberty St., Conneaut OH who is honored to be entrusted
with his services and an hour of visitation Friday at the church from 10:00am until the
time of service at 11:00.

Memorial Contributions can be made in his memory to the Conneaut Firefighters
Association Local 651, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, or the Alzheimer’s
Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the church.
