John J. Munson

John J. Munson, 95, of Conneaut, passed away at home Sunday morning, April 21, 2019.  He was born November 23, 1923 in Pittsburgh, PA to Stanley and Barbara (Vinsky) Munson. 

John graduated from Central Catholic High School and attended the Stenotype  Institute of Pittsburgh before entering the U.S. Army.  A veteran of World War II, Mr. Munson served as a stenographer at the trials of war criminals, recording the many atrocities committed during the war.   He worked at EMCO Wheaton, retiring when the plant closed.   

A member of St. Mary Church, John served as a Eucharistic Minister, assisting at Mass and visiting parishioners at local nursing homes.

Mr.  Munson volunteered at St. Mary’s Bingo fundraiser calling out numbers each Tuesday evening for many years.  For over 50 years, he served as league secretary/treasurer for several teams at El Camp Lanes, earning him a place in the Ashtabula County Bowling Hall of Fame. John was an avid Jeopardy fan—his family knew not to interrupt him during the program broadcast!  He tackled the daily word jumble and crossword puzzle with skillful enthusiasm.  John enjoyed watching the NFL, especially his beloved Steelers.   He also enjoyed playing bridge, was a good cook and a great baker, delighting his grandchildren with cookies and mini cupcakes.  A huge part of his life was spent following his grandchildren’s activities. Family was everything to him.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mary Louise (Price) Munson; daughters Barbara Jo (Richard) Roth of Willoughby and Kathleen (Stephen) Bunnell of Conneaut; sons Mark  of Conneaut and David (Julie) of Allen, Texas.  He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Eric, (Alyson), Katherine, Jeremy, Emily, Megan (Zac), Kelsey (Jake), Andrew (Kaygan), Lauren, Matthew (Holly) and Michael and great grandchildren Austin, Finley and Lincoln.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Edward, Stanley, Charles, Joseph and Ann.

Family and friends may call from 6-8 pm on Friday, April 26, 2019 at the Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty Street, Conneaut, which has been entrusted with arrangements.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 480 State Street, Conneaut, with Father Philip Miller presiding.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Cowle Post #151.

Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society or Bella Care Hospice.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the church.
