Martha (Stump) Benson

Martha Benson, 90 of Conneaut, OH passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025 at The Villa at The Lake. She was born June1, 1934 in Conneaut, OH to Fred and Helen (Johnson) Stump.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and graduated from Conneaut High school in 1953.

Martha was highly active throughout her life, belonging to the Conneaut Artist Guild, a charter member of the Conneaut Historical Society and long-time member of the Conneaut High School music boosters. She found pleasure in authoring short stories and poems. For her 90th birthday, her family had her poetry published in a book which is available on Amazon:  A Collection of Farm Life Poetry (by Martha Benson).  She and longtime friend, Louise Legeza, wrote the Conneaut High School 100-year history book as well as assisting in the 1985 Ashtabula County History book. She had a knack and soft spirit for photography and assisted Dr. Singh with publishing his amazing books of photography. Although Martha was a homemaker, she found joy in transporting Amish families to places of need and in turn they became family.

Her love for family was very prominent and instilled at an early age. She married Richard (Dick) Benson on September 12, 1953 and together they raised four sons.  She was active with growing the family dairy farm and their maple syrup business. She provided constant support for her boys as they grew and was an incredibly involved mother with their activities.

Martha is survived by her four children Rick, Jerry (Karen), Terry (Martha) and Rock (Jodie) Benson, all of Conneaut, OH; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and more distant relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, daughter-in-law Debbie (Ricks wife) and four brothers John, Bailey, David and Charles Stump.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM, January 31, 2025 at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH 44030 who has been entrusted with her arrangements.

Visitation will be January 30, 2025 from 5:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home.
