Nancy L. Horton, 99, died Thursday, October 28, 2021, at her Liberty Street home surrounded by all her family.
She was born April 26, 1922, in Ashtabula, daughter of Charles and Inez (Holt) Hegfield.
A Conneaut resident for the past 75 years. She is a graduate of the class of 1941 from Ashtabula’s Harbor High School.
Mrs. Horton was a long-time member of The United Church of Christ of Conneaut where she was a deaconess, served on many different church committees, sang in the choir, taught an adult Sunday School class for many years, and led several women’s Bible studies. In her later years, she enjoyed watching several local churches’ services each week on the local TV station.
Mrs. Horton always considered it her calling to be a home maker, which she did with finesse. She enjoyed family and family outings, tent camping, gardening, sewing, knitting, quilting, baking, and cooking. She and her husband, Dean, were generous hosts and enjoyed sharing their home and a cup of coffee or a meal with friends and strangers, alike. A natural storyteller, she entertained her guests, and everyone felt welcome and at ease. Mrs. Horton often said, “the first time you come to my house, you’re a guest… the next time you come, you’re family.” Traveling with her brother and his wife in their later years with her husband was a treat they both enjoyed… four adults and 2 dogs seeing the sites.
Mrs. Horton opened her home to become a kindergarten classroom with Hannah Colson in the late 1940’s. She was one of the founders of the Conneaut Quilting Guild which is still active today. For many years she served on the local election board during all times of voting.
Survivors include her daughter Lynda (David) Blood of Conneaut; 3 grandchildren, Fredrick, Jarrod (Wendy) and Sara Sherer; 6 great-grandchildren, Dean, Matthew, Moria and Laura Blood, and Ian and Mark Sherer; 1 great-great-granddaughter Genesis Platz; and nephew Gordon (Laura) Hegfield.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 70 years, Dean in 2012, her son Fredrick in 1964, her foster son Lee Hughlett, her brother Robert Hegfield II, and nephew Robert Hegfield III.
