Rev. David L. Blood, 77, of Conneaut passed away from Lewy Body Dementia on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, in his home with the support of hospice. He was surrounded by his family who were grateful for his devotion, provision, leadership and love, not to mention his service and ministry. David was born in Conneaut, Ohio, on April 4, 1947, the son of the late Donald E. Blood and Florence (Bennett) Blood Loomis. He attended Rowe Local Schools until his senior year when the district consolidated with Conneaut City Schools and graduated in 1965 from Conneaut High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Mount Union College in 1969, Master of Divinity from Methodist Theological School in Ohio in 1972. He also completed graduate coursework at Youngstown State University and several studies throughout his career in ministry through the Beeson Institute.
First and foremost, Rev. Blood was a man of God. David’s ministry began in 1967. At the age of 21, while he was an undergraduate student, he received his first appointment at New Franklin and Paris churches in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. While he was a seminarian, he was appointed to Summit Station UMC in the West Ohio Conference. He was ordained as an Elder in 1973 and spent the remainder of his career serving in appointments with the East Ohio Conference. Throughout his career he served various appointments: East Rochester, Bayard and Kensington UMCs in Stark County; Trinity UMC in Ashtabula; Kinsman UMC in Kinsman; Epworth UMC in Bucyrus; Franklin and Adario UMCs as the Senior Pastor of a Cooperative Ministry; First UMC in Carrollton; and he retired after 40 years of ministry from Poland UMC. After he retired, his ministry continued as he served part-time at Stateline and Gageville UMCs in Ashtabula County and as the pastor at Live Oak RV and Golf Resort for a total of 12 additional years. In his 52 years of ministry, David was known for his work ethic and administrative expertise. In that time, imagine the number of lives touched through worship services, small group studies, weddings, baptisms, and funerals. Beyond the local church he served on many committees and in various capacities in local communities and within the district and conference. Of note are his service and years with Christian Youth Fellowship, membership and involvement in the East Ohio Evangelical Fellowship, and service on the board of the East Ohio United Methodist Conference Credit Union.
Dave was a loving and devoted family man. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren at sporting, music, and extracurricular events, traveling in his RV, watching the Cleveland Indians, remodeling, spending winters in Florida, and doing almost anything he could with Lynda. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lynda (Horton) Blood whom he married on September 9, 1967; his three children: Fred Blood of Conneaut, Jarrod (Wendy) Blood of Conneaut, and Sara Sherer of Alliance. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, a sister Denise (John) Bowman, brother Allen (Peggy) Blood, brother-in-law Alan Mitchell, two stepbrothers, and many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Penny (Blood) Mitchell.
