Robert Chirakos Obituary

Robert Anthony "Bob"  Chirakos, 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 19th, 2021 at his home in Mentor, Ohio. He was born November 10th, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio to Anthony Frank and Zoe Carandoni Chirakos of Greece.

He grew up in Steubenville, OH where he had a shoeshine business and paper route as a boy. While his mother worked as a librarian, Bob had opportunity to read the entire library which propelled his passion of knowledge, learning, and education. He moved to Campbell, Ohio with his family as a young man where he learned to fly in the aeronautical patrol. At the age of 17, Bob joined the US Navy during WWII, and served on the USS North Carolina. Even though he was Greek, he managed to stay out of the kitchen and instead found his way to managing the ship’s store. After the war, Bob earned his Engineering Degree from Case Western Reserve and later an MBA from Harvard Business School. He married Mary Mastorides of Youngstown, OH on June 11, 1950 and took a multi-month honeymoon traveling across the entire United States. His working career saw him travel the world with GE, Boeing, Cleveland Pneumatic Tool, Phillips Industries and later its subsidiary, Dexter Axle where he retired as a vice president after many years of service. His favorite country was the “old” Japan in the early 1950’s. Later in his career, Bob acted as a consultant and “fixer” for companies facing difficulties. He was a member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Erie, PA and also attended the Conneaut First Assembly of God and the Conneaut Church of God. Socially he was involved with Toastmasters, Kiwanis, St. Pauls Greek Orthodox Church in North Royalton, Boy Scouts. Following Mary’s passing, he married Carol Dell in 2005 and enjoyed numerous adventures in Conneaut and Mentor, OH. He always enjoyed entertaining and spending time with family and friends.

In retirement Bob explored his passions for reading, traveling, woodworking, and spending time with his family. His advice and conversations are treasured by all of those that were blessed by them.

He is survived by his second wife Carol Chirakos of Mentor, OH; his stepdaughter Cheri Getce, his daughter Sylvia Chirakos-Dorsey of Opelika, AL, his son Sam Chirakos (Lori) of Dublin, OH, his son Tony Chirakos of Dublin, OH, and; grandchildren, Christopher (Lisa) Dorsey, David Dorsey, Lexi Chirakos, Ana Chirakos, Ioannis and Demitrious Chirakos; great-grandchildren, Andrew Dorsey, Avery Dorsey, his godson Tony Chirakos, step grandchildren, Tiffany (Shawn) Braden, Angela Ross; step great grandchildren, Adrianna & Jonah Ross, Madisyn & Emma Braden, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Zoe Chirakos, his sister Madeline Chirakos, his first wife of 53 years Mary Chirakos, and his brother Frank Chirakos.
