Rodney Jay Raker, 76, of Conneaut, passed away on Sunday, August 28th, 2022.
Rod was born on March 18th, 1946 in East St. Louis, IL to David Milo and Katherine Lucille (Melton) Raker. He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a master's degree in ornamental horticulture from the University of Illinois. After moving to Ohio to take a job with the Extension Service, he spent the majority of his career as a nursery salesman serving Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. He served as chairman of the Conneaut Tree Commission and was a member of the Friends of Conneaut Creek. In his later years, he spearheaded the construction of the Dorothy Shumake Arboretum at Malek Park in Conneaut, Ohio.
Music was an integral part of Rod's life. For many years, he played trumpet in the Lighthouse Dixieland Jazz Band. He entertained many with his ability to play music on the piano by ear. He was an avid reader of nonfiction, particularly of philosophy and theology. In his free time, he enjoyed card games, puzzles, and watching baseball games with his sons.
Survivors include his children - David Raker of Toledo, OH, Ravella Raker of Pittsburgh, PA, and Corbett Raker of Manchester, NH. He is preceded in death by his sister, Davie Sue Raker of Dupo, IL, and his parents.
A celebration of life will be 2-4 PM, Saturday October 1st, 2022, at the Marcy Family Center, 180 Harbor St., Conneaut, OH. All are welcome to attend.
