Vonna Carlson Obituary

Vonna C. Carlson, 80, passed away on January 26, 2021, while wintering in Cape Elizabeth, ME. She was born December 1, 1940, the daughter of Charles A. and F. Arlene (Greenwood) Thompson.

After graduating from Rowe High School in 1958, Vonna worked at various companies,  including the former Astatic Corporation, Brown Memorial Hospital, Rockwell Industries, and Rich’s Donuts, ultimately retiring from Lowe’s.  Her proudest and most enjoyable occupation, though, was working beside her husband, Bill, at the family-owned Conneaut Hardware Store, in downtown Conneaut, OH.

Throughout her life, Vonna had an eye for art and was known for her various creative pursuits, most notably her extensive, and gallery-worthy, cross-stitch works, and her beloved acrylic paintings.   She enthusiastically participated in group classes taught by Bill Dalton and enjoyed having her art displayed in his shows at the Conneaut Public Library. She will be remembered for enlivening family gatherings by bringing ceramics to paint or craft projects for the young ones to do. In addition to her artistic endeavors, she enjoyed bowling, and was dedicated to attending her husband and sons’ baseball games, a tradition she continued when her grandsons began playing baseball, too.   Vonna had a streak of wanderlust and was proudest of her adventurous travels to the great state of Hawaii.  She and Bill were inseparable, in family life, in travel, and in their hearts.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 60 years, William “Bill”,  whom she married September 1, 1961;  son Steve of Cape Elizabeth, ME; grandsons Spencer (Cassandra Kosovec) of Akron, OH, and Aaron (Olivia) of North Kingsville, OH; great-grandchildren Milo and Warner Carlson, and Rowan Kosovec; daughter-in-law Debbie Carlson of Conneaut, OH;  sisters Shirley Reinke of Albion, PA, and Linda Thompson of Conneaut, OH; brother Dean Thompson of Lompoc, CA; sisters-in-law Judy Thompson of Dunstable, MA, and Mary Lee Coxon of Conneaut, OH; brothers-in-law Bob (Nancy) Carlson of  Andover, OH, and Dick Carlson of Conneaut, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Burt; brothers Leslie and Ron Thompson; sisters-in-law Marian Thompson, Sara Frost,  and Shirley Carlson;  brother-in-law Charles Reinke;  great-nephew Tyler Aiken; and lifelong friend Carol Tuttle Coffman.

A private funeral service will be held on February 2, 2021, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH.  Burial will follow in Kelloggsville Cemetery.

Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the funeral and graveside service will be streamed live on the Marcy Funeral Home Facebook page beginning at 1:00pm on Tuesday, February 2, 2021.  There will be a live feed for the funeral, followed by a separate live feed for the graveside service, which will commence upon arrival at the cemetery.  A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on a future date.
